In light of...recent events, I think we need some more lighthearted topics. Topics like these. So I'm going to bump this with some more "facts".

Did you know...

  • ...that questions end in question marks? Not with periods. Or exclamation points!
  • ...that, according to the DPRK, "Kim Jong-Il is regarded by many as the greatest being that the entirety of humanity has ever seen*...and has caught Mew in Pokémon, obtained the Triforce in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and resurrected Aerith in Final Fantasy VII?"

Coconut water can be used as an IV fluid.

Coconuts kill more people each year than sharks do.

The average shark grows more than 50,000 teeth in its lifetime, to compensate for them 'shedding', and getting knocked out.

Pigeon poop can contain more than 60 diseases.

In fast food restaurants, the ice in the vending machine is often dirtier than the toilet water.

Useless fact #1: Cat urine glows in the blacklight! (So I'm told.)

Useless fact #2: In 2001, St. Patrick's Day was banned in Ireland because of the scare caused by foot and mouth disease. (Courtesy of my fiance on that one.)

Useless fact #3: It is a myth that if you touch a baby bird, the mother will smell it and throw said baby out of the nest- of all birds, only condors and vultures are capable of smelling.

The gaboon viper (bitis gabonicus) has the longest fangs of any snake. 2.5 inches.

If an unprotected human being went to the bottom of Mariana's Trench, he/she would be crushed to roughly the size of a pop can.

Not true. :P I looked this up on the net, and guess what I found?

Quote:
Irukandji Jellyfish? What is lrukandji?

You could be forgiven for thinking irukandji is a type of jellyfish but it is actually a syndrome, or a set of symptoms that occur as a result of a jellyfish sting. It is thought at least ten different species of jellyfish could be responsible for the syndrome although only five have been identified so far.

The syndrome can last from a few hours to a few days and varies in intensity. It begins with a mild sting which is followed by severe lower back pain, muscle cramps in arms, legs, stomach and chest, sweating, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, headaches and palpitations. It has been known to cause cardiac failure.

And another interesting tidbit.

Quote:
In 1964 Dr. jack Barnes sought to find the cause of the lrukandji syndrome and spent several hours lying in a wetsuit in the water near Cairns on the Great Barrier Reef.
A thumbnail-sized jellyfish swum past his mask, he plucked it out, stung himself, his son and a surf life saver, to ensure he'd caught the culprit and all three ended up in hospital. The jellyfish was later called Caruka Barnesi (after Dr. Barnes) and to date it is the only jellyfish known to cause the lrukandji syndrome.
