I saw the movie a few days ago (yay for in-theater reruns!), and I don't think that it was bad at all. I haven't read the book (and don't really plan to), so I'm taking the movie for itself without comparing. I wouldn't call it great, since parts of it were a bit too cliché, but it did have some nice moments that put it apart from other fantasy movies.

The only thing that really bugged me was the ending. While I know that this is part 1 of a trilogy, the end sequence didn't felt... complete enough, somehow. We are left hanging, without as much as a "to be continued" on screen. It catched my interest enough that I'll probably go see the two follow-ups, at least.

I saw it the other night, and I enjoyed it. I especially liked the battle at the end, where Eragon had the dragon catapult him over to the other guy. Pretty good thinking, I'd say.

Anyway, I think the movie was probably better than most of the fans made it out to be. It's just that it wasn't the book, and so they feel that some sacred text has been molested, for lack of a better word.

It's difficult finding movies that adhere very closely to their literary parents. The only book movies I've seen that stuck extremely close to the book itself were the first Harry Potter movie and the Da Vinci Code.

I actually just finished reading the book AFTER I saw the movie. I kind of have to agree with you, seriously people, don't go, "ZOMG, ARYA'S HAIR ISN'T BLONDE IN THE BOOK!".

That doesn't have to be a bad thing, though: books often don't translate well into movie format without being adapted. Take Lord of the Rings, for instance: the whole sequence with Tom Bombadil was thankfully omitted. It would have felt completely out of place with the story and general pace of the movies.

So it would have been out of place in the movie you say? But was it ever out of place in the book then. After all, it would have to be out of place in the book to be out of place in the movie, as they are pretty much exact replicas. And on a side note: I like Tom Bombadil...

I like Tom Bombadil too, but I see where Doc's coming from, and I understand why they took it out. Maybe it's from watching so many commentaries and such (yes, I'm a huge LotR junky) but it seems to me that, especially (mostly) regarding people who hadn't read the book, the movie had a pace to keep. The entire Tom Bombadil sequence was almost like a reprieve from the story. Things started to pick up, and then they fell back to a standstill, which was okay for the book, but for the movie? How many people, who weren't hardcore fans of the book, would want an hour-long aside that seemingly had nothing to do with the plot?

Books and movies pace differently. Somethings are more interesting visually, while others are more interesting in the literary world. Not everything can carry over.

This is, of course, a huge point to remember. I believe it was Roald Dahl's wife that said that it was best for movies to differ from the book, considering the vastly different mediums involved.

I thought it was pretty cool, All it would make is a silly AD&D scenario as a conversion though. ^_^
