It's not the Xbox 360... It's not the PS3... It's not the Wii...

It's the Nintendo DS! Square Enix just released the news that Dragon Quest IX is being developped exclusively for the Nintendo DS. IGN has the news and a few screenshots.

For those of you who are going "meh, so what"?, don't underestimate this: the Dragon Quest series is big, especially in Japan. This is one of the largest system-seller over there, and the fact that the game (and not a mere side-title) is coming for a handheld system is definitely surprising. Personally, I'm glad that it's coming for the DS, since I definitely expected a Playstation 3 announcement eventually. It should be fun to watch the news coming in the next months!

Well, as long as it aint the ATB-system, I can care less for turn-bases systems. :P

I do not know much about the DQ series. Is it a series of non-related stories like Final Fantasy or are they related?

Dragon Quest, like Final Fantasy, share the same elements like similar monsters and spells, but I haven't seen a "serious-looking" Dragon Quest.

Meanwhile, the PSP is getting a port of FFT. I'm sorry DS, but PSP just won me over.

Wow, a port. Not like they didn't port that game for the GBA already.

But anyways yeah Doc, it's obvious now who's won the console wars. DS sales are already through the roof over HERE (it seems) so I can imagine the insanity that will be happening in Japan.

Hell, I even want to preorder.

I haven't played Dragon Quest, but I always hear that it's good. They also nee more DS Lite colors. I'm satisfied with my black one but some other people wouldt probably buy a DS if it had other colors. ^_-

You don't seem to know enough about the two series: while Final Fantasy is more popular than Dragon Quest in North America, it's the opposite in Japan, by a large factor. Most of the time, it's Japan that counts for the future of game systems. On a side note, apparently, this will be the first mainstream DQ game to NOT have turn-based battles! The game is set of be an action-RPG instead. (I like those menues, but eh, we'll see!)

The Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior for the older games outside Japan) works by trilogy: the first three happen in the same world, the next three are in another universe together, and the same applies with the last three. They share more than a few color-swapped monsters.

See, NOW I can begin to care about it more. Hell, even a battle system like Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga would be better.

Yea. FFTA was a big disappointment. FFT was much better by story, music, and their job classes. (If only it wasn't buggy and mistranslated...)

I hope the PSP version is fully done this time. It also looks as if they added a new job class... Hopefully SquareEnix doesn't mess around with it. The original just needed polishing; nothing more.

I already know a handheld would win overall. Why get a console when you could buy a handheld for under $200, get games for under $30, and able to use anywhere and everywhere? Now that I'm paying more attention to all the consoles' prices, they all are very expensive (it's either buying the $60-50 games, the accessories, or the console itself that will drive up the cost). It's just the handhelds that look reasonably affordable in the long run.

If all you've played are the first two, it's normal that you don't have a very high opinion of the series. You have to take them in context of their release: they were among the first console RPGs to ever be released, so it's obvious that they'd be limited at first. It's a good thing that the North American version of Dragon Warrior I was improved over the Japanese version: in the original, the character was always facing the screen no matter where you were going! When you wanted to talk to someone, you needed to choose in which direction that person was standing...

If you don't mind NES graphics, try out Dragon Warrior IV if you have the chance. The story and battles are far more entertaining than the previous three. It remains my favorite game of the series to this day.

As far as I understand, the DS is currently outselling all the consoles in Japan, and I'm pretty sure it is selling extremely well around the world as well. Given this, it isn't very surprising that DragonQuest IX will be released on the DS - the Playstation, Nintendo 64 and Saturn era had just begun when DragonQuest VI was released in Japan, and DragonQuest VII was released on the Playstation right before the PS2, Xbox and Gamecube generation began. The series generally has been on consoles that had a high install base. In accordance, it isn't the least bit surprising that the ninth game in the series won't be on the PS3. If I'm surprised, it's because Suqare-Enix choose the DS over the Wii or PS2.

I'm not sure what to think of the impact this could have on the current console war. The DS isn't actually a console and isn't really competing against the Wii, PS3 or Xbox360. It's also hard to tell how many DS' DragonQuest IX will sell, because so many people already have one. Not to mention that the DS is already selling at a high rate. So really, it's hard to tell.

Also, the Japanese market is actually smaller than the American and European markets now. If anything, winning them over now is more valuable because it gets support of Japanese Developers, whose games sell around the world. I think that was the biggest downfall of the Xbox and why Microsoft is so desperate to win over the Japanese with the 360; if a person wasn't into Halo, the Xbox probably didn't appeal to them to much.

Still, this isn't a good sign for the PS3. DragonQuest IX definitely would have helped sell the PS3 into Japanese homes, getting it more support from other developers. Still, like Helldragon mentioned, there still is Final Fantasy XIII on the PS3 which will help sell it. In Japan, and around the world - just the rate at which it'll help really can't be calculated at this point. Personally I'm disappointed that Final Fantasy XIII will have Motomu Toriyama/Tetsuya Nomura at the helm, but I guess that's a story for another topic.

Back to DragonQuest IX, I'm honestly very disappointed in the changes to the gameplay from what I've read and seen so far. For a series that had up to this point kept up with tradition, it's just disappointing. Still, the game itself might be alright and I won't completely write it off.

Were you assaulted by a video game console when you were a child or something, Zupp?

Seriously, if you think every single video game is a worthless piece of crap, why the hell are you even on a video game forum? I sincerely hope there are SOME games you respect. Cuz it certainly doesn't sound like it.

Then stick to Nintendo's handhelds and don't touch consoles, simple as that. The handhelds get several releases that match the older styles of games, unlike the 3D things that are more popular on home consoles.

The DS and the Wii both bring the new spice to the gaming world. The DS has a vast amount of games that are new and strange(Pheonix Wright), but make it enjoyible and fun to the user. I really hate to see war games that basically have the same kind of plot as old or previous games. I think the gaming industries want to milk the game plots till they die...

Not much you can do when you base your game off of reality, if you mean THOSE kind of war games anyhow.

I see where Make was coming from though, the last game I've gotten was Phoenix Wright 2..and before that, Pokemon FireRed..which of course is a revamped Pokemon Red. And before that, the original Phoenix Wright. I haven't played any of the 3D X games, any BN or MM Zero, any GTA, no Twilight Princess, etc etc etc. The only games that seem to interest me anymore are RPGs.

What I wouldn't give for a nice old space shooter like R-Type and Gradius. (yes I have R-Type Final and Gradius V, lol. I'm just waiting for more)

Good. I wasn't too excited about the concept of real-time battles entering the series, I'd rather keep the strategy that comes from the classic turn-based mode instead of button mashing.
