Chatroom alternative solutions

There has been quite some talk about that chatroom a while ago, as it had some problems with spam, annoying members, pop-ups, and the like. I worked on some alternative solutions, and got three of them. Here\'s a rundown of each possibility, with the positive and negative points of each. Click on the title of a chatroom to open it! Please note that the two last rooms weren\'t much customized yet. They would get some changes to make them easier to use.

Bravenet Chatroom: That\'s the current chatroom in use. Java applet.
Plus: Easy to use, no learning curve
Minus: Pop-ups, no kick / ban feature, no spam control, can\'t be accessed behind proxies (many schools)

phpMyChat: Web-based chatroom.
Plus: Can be accessed from anywhere (even behind proxies), ability to choose text color, logs chat text to identify spammers
Minus: Might be bad on bandwidth (not too sure yet)

eIRC: Java applet like the current chatroom.
Plus: Can be accessed through any IRC client (mIRC, for example), easy kick / ban and spam control, has most IRC features available
Minus: Can\'t be accessed behind proxies (many schools)

I didn\'t made this topic into a poll so I could get complete answers instead of simple poll votes. Also, if you have anything to add, or nay questions, please speak up!

Anyways,my vote is for phpMyChat. We get to use COLOR and we have to register so we can\'t annoy people. Sounds good. Besides, whose ever on this site when the broadband is down?

I vote on eIRC.

*Relieves* Phew i thought this would never come... When the SPAMmer rates were higher then expected i quit. And with this Ban and Kick control we can stop those idiots :).

I vote eIRC as well.

Spam must be stopped, and that method seems the best, as phpMyChat seems a little odd, and BraveNet... well, I won\'t go there with my views on that. Plus, the ability to use mIRC is a major plus IMO.

I vote phpMyChat! it seems really great.:cool:

I have been told that the essence of being Splash Woman is not in attaining perfection, but in the attempt.

If so, then Splash Woman in general does not qualify as, well, human.

well...
i think the IRC based chat is better, but not everyone can use it, and we want everyone to be able to use it... right?
so i think phpMyChat thing is the one we should choose(unless we find a way to test both of the chat systems and then choose)

The bravenet chat rooms are crap, they hardly have any control over members and options. The eICR sounds the best but some people won\'t be able to get into it so i\'ll go for phpMyChat. Tell us when the new chat room is up.

Sorry I\'m a little late on this, but you can also make your own chatroom if you take some time off to learn PERL. That\'s how my bro does his chatroom, is he make it himself.

I like the second choice best, even if it does ruin your bandwidth. But then again, you get to add less stuff to your site... hmmnn... ::conf:

ProtoStar, I already know Perl I prefer to code in PHP anyway. I could code my own chatroom, yes, but that would be pretty the same as phpMyChat. That\'s why I didn\'t put that as a fourth solution.

so it can be a sub-solution...(sub-solution... lol, sounds funny)

there is nothing better than a good chat with the option to change whatever you want...
i think we should make a kind of a vote between the IRC based(more annoying to enter for some people) or the php one(easiest to enter, less advance)(i think)

I could probably load it onto my webserver to save you space, and you could work from there. (I got unlimited space, thanks to my bro) If not, then I don\'t know what to say about the other three choices...

I\'m not saying yet that I\'m making a final choice, but it\'s very obvious that the Bravenet chat won\'t stay for long I\'ll take a closer look at the two others to check which one could be customized more, and such details. More to come...

After looking more in deep into the two rooms, I\'ll be going with phpMyChat. Both alternative chatrooms are now going offline, and the new chat will replace the current one once I\'m done with all the modifications I want to do.
