Since the move to 1.7 will feature a new land generator, no matter what we do, we'll be getting somewhat ugly biome borders. This gives us an opening to try doing stuff differently.

I received a request some time back to use large biomes for the main world, and I wanted to get the mood of the community on the idea. As a reminder, large biomes look and generate the same as regular ones, except that they're 4x4 times bigger on the x and z axis.

On the upside, large biomes mean a somewhat more realistic terrain. The extreme hills look more spread out and natural, while plains and the like are much bigger, allowing large-scale projects to happen without being stretched over several biomes (and sometimes weather!) types.

On the downside, large biomes are LARGE. You lose in diversity since everything is so spread out, and you can travel through deserts for a long time if you're looking for something else. This means that some people will be spending much more time travelling to get anywhere. At least, stupidly large oceans no longer happen so that's avoided.

How'd you feel about that?

I like the idea of large biomes, as you're aware. I love the idea of building in a desert, and not having lush fields and forests 5 feet from my house in every direction. Likewise, if I live in the jungle, I don't want to look out over the canopy and see snow on one side of me, and desert on the other.

I prefer large biomes myself, especially since the new generator, as you noted, is supposed to generate far less massive oceans. I do rather dislike being spread between 4 biomes while working on just one town.

As for roading/railroading over larger biomes, I say bring it the hell on!

I wouldn't mind large biomes. Having a desert, snowfall and extreme hills all together is neat, but having a larger area to do specific builds would be cool here.

And seriously, Doc? "travel through deserts for a long time..." Have you SEEN how big your world is? I don't think people traveling far is one of your worries...

As long as they don't end up in stupid places(in between two towns) I'm fine with it.

I vote for large biomes. What happens to our current constructions?

This is something that'd have no effect whatsoever on existing regions. Only newly generated terrain, after the update, would be using large biomes.

What doc is talking about would be - probably another map trim followed by - all unexplored areas of the map being generated as large biomes instead of standard biomes. Nothing that has already been built, stashed or dug out would be altered.

I'm against the idea of Large Biomes following 1.7 for one reason, and one reason only. People have difficulty discovering the new, rarer biomes already; particularly the Ice Spike Plains biome famous for its Packed Ice block, and some of the new variant forms of the Mesa and Forest biomes. If the server were NOT updated to 1.7, I would say go for it. But Large Biomes would make the new Biomes even MORE difficult to encounter.

In addition, the existing biome setup on our current map SHOULD make it easier to find some of the new biomes more quickly, as we already have defined "hot" and "cold" biomes, which will help those ice spikes and mesas show up.
