It hadn't look good for a while, and now it's confirmed: E3 2022 is cancelled, both physical and virtual events.

They're talking about coming back in 2023, but I feel like the wind has gone out of their sails already. With various major companies like Nintendo and Sony walking out in recent years, and rising events like The Game Awards, I'm not sure they have enough momentum to keep going!

It's easier for the companies to hose their own events and control everything that way, is what it is.

Games are just so overhyped and essentially becoming just like movies now.

idk how I feel about this. I used to follow E3 coverage, but I have never followed all of the shows from each individual publisher apart from Nintendo's. None of them have enough to justify an entire show all to themselves, while E3 coverage would get you one or two things from each publisher. Even Nintendo doesn't really do that much I'm interested in.

The Steam Queue and Twitch are how I discover most new releases these days, especially since TotalBiscuit died.

I don't like the format of The Game Awards as a replacement, since it pretends to be an awards show but it's just an excuse to cram "World Premieres™" trailers and celebrities. I'll follow individual developers and track other announcements through the year.

Yeah, feels like E3 has lost its place — with publishers hosting their own events and The Game Awards growing, it’s tough to see a full comeback.
