Recently, I have been seeing girls\' names with the word \"Chan\" at the end. What gives!? Why \"chan\" as the last part of a girls\' first name!?

You use \"chan\" in a japanese name.

For example: Sakura-chan

Then, why \"can\"? Who made this screw-up on a girl\'s name?

I don\'t know why and I have no clue what you are saying.

I mean: who invented the pre-fix in the first place?

Erm, is it just girls? I thought it could be put after any person with a translated Japanese name. That\'s just what I thought, I could be wrong.

P. S. I am probably wrong at least 68% of the time.

It\'s Japanese culture.

there\'s suffixes: -chan, -san, -sama, -kun

-kun is generally used for guys... though, -chan can be used for both boys and girls.

-san is more like, \"Mr. (name here)\"

-sama is something like Lord (name here)...

and you complain about the people who invented them yet you make a topic about \"Japanese Names\".

I don\'t think you even know anything about Japanese culture. :P

Not that I know enough myself, I\'m still learning. :E

Edit-- I can\'t figure out the right term. I\'m tired and having a bad day.

A correction: a prefix goes at the beginning of a word, while a suffix goes at the end.

[Edited on 14-10-2004 by Dr. Cossack]
Whoops, my mistake.

I mean, why the \"chan\" suffix?

Better, Doc? Edit these posts with \"prefix\" in them. Please?

Sensei isn\'t really a suffix... it\'s just the word for teacher from what I\'ve seen. Dono is just well, I don\'t think I\'ve ever seen it used other than Kenshin calling Karou \"Kaoru-Dono\"...

As previously stated, \"chan\" is a Japanese suffix. It indicates a closeness, endearment, and/or youth. It is very friendly and \"cute\". Although \"chan\" can be used for either males or females, it is usually used for females.

Correct my lack of education on the subject but if Jackie Chan, his last name is Chan. And Chan is also a suffix. So that\'s kinda like his name is Jackie mr/mrs? I know I\'m wrong... I\'m just looking for somebody to explain.

Probablly just a coincidence. *shrug*

Well since those were forms of honorifics I thought I might say them anyway...Anyway Gutter, Jackie Chan \'s last name Chan is Chinese, the suffix \"Chan\" is Japanese.
