I saw Batman Begins Friday afternoon. I really enjoyed it myself - I think it completely blew away the previous Batman attempts. So far, I'd say that this is my favorite movie of this year. The only contender for me would be Gong Fu (Kung Fu Hustle), but that's technically 2004.

Christian Bale was an excellent Bruce Wayne and Batman. The development of the character was handled rather well, I think. Much credit should be given to Cillian Murhpy as well - I wish he was given more screentime. And Gary Oldman was perfect as Jim Gordon.

Spoiler (click to toggle)
What fate do you believe Ra's Al Ghul faced? This has plagued me since I saw the movie. We never actually see him die. We do see him ready to accept his fate, but we do not see him die. And the character is supposed to be immortal; the movie however, places realism above all else.

Further more, I enjoyed the relationship between Ra's Al Ghul and Bruce Wayne/Batman. Ra's wanted Bruce right by his side, which I think was cool. Ra's did want Bruce to be his succesor at one point. It's abit of a shame that his daughter was left out of the movie, I guess, but she really would have complicated things.

Overall, I'd have to say a very good movie. Anyone else's thoughts?

i'm going to see that tomorrow. i think it'll kill all those other super hero movies. i hear that all of batman's items and stuff that he uses has a reasonable explanation behind them, which i think is cool. and i also hear (quote) : "In every super hero movie, the villian is always the most interesting character. Now, the hero is." i read it in a tribute magazine. This stuff true?

Loved it.

Didn't like seeing Kate Holmes there. (I'm sick of the CRAP with her and that Tom guy. Shut up, media.)

There were some points where I was a little confused... so I might need to see the movie again with captions. X_x

I would think Ra's would be alive. Though, what happened to him makes it look like there was no chance of survival.

Okay, I'm stupid and shouldn't write things when I'm tired. I'd just like to say that the movie doesn't place realism above all else, but instead tries to weave the elements together in such a manner that one might be able to believe this has the possiblity of being real. Still, the movie isn't real.

I had to add that first.

Make no mistake, this is Batman's movie. The plot revolves almost completely around him. He's not just there to fight off the villains.

That said, it would have been nice had the villains had abit more screentime. Still, a very well done movie.

It's very true that it doesn't look like he could have survived - the movie also made no mentions of his Lazarus Pit either.. Still, what I think is interesting is that they could decide not to use Ra's again, but if they never actually say that he died it won't be a huge depart from how Ra's is supposed to be.

NO I HAVEN'T SEEN IT, STOP ASKING!

I am watching Spidey 1 on cable though. :P

Personally I don't like how the Scarecrow didn't seem to get much screentime, but..I guess there just wasn't enough time for him, which is a shame. Scarecrow is a cool villain... Maybe they described Bats enough in this movie, so they'll have time for villains in the sequel. ;P

Good movie except...

the plot was un-balanced.
You know?
There was too much of that Valconey (sp?) crap and

Spoiler (click to toggle)
the scarecrow guy was developed too much to be killed by a TASER

Like for a good part of the movie, Ra is left out, which isn't cool.

Plus the plot was predictable, maybe that's just me...

I think the Falcone storyline enhanced the plot, myself. Falcone is the last big crime boss in Gotham before the Rogue's Gallery show up. This works perfectly with Gordon's last speech to Batman when the Bat Signal is revealed - the power in Gotham will shift from ordinary crooks to the villains people are familiar with.

Though I agree the plot was unbalanced. Batman's origins was developed with much care during the first half, but the second half had much more focus on action. Still, I don't think the plot was bad once Batman showed up, and Bale was alot of fun to watch as the Dark Knight.

Spoiler (click to toggle)

The focus on Falcone also develops the decadent state Gotham is in, and gives motivation not only to Bruce but Ra's Al Ghul as well.

Also,

Spoiler (click to toggle)
The Scarecrow didn't die. He, like many of the released inmates of Arkham were still at large when the movie ended. The taser only hurt him, causing him to run off. Which is an accurate representation of the character. Scarecrow is an intellectual who understands how the mind works and uses this along with his gases to his advantage. Physically however, he's a weak character.

As for Ra's Al Ghul, I think it's a good thing he was barely in the movie. The beginning wanted to make us believe that he was dead; now whether or not you believe this or not, this is still how the plot developed. While Ra's appearance in Gotham was predictable(in my case, I ruined it for myself by discovering Liam Neeson was really Ra's Al Ghul before I saw the movie), I enjoyed that the movie didn't throw everything out into the open until necessary.

I haven't seen it yet, though I do want to... (can't since I have no car, no license, and my dad thinks the movie would be too stupid to go see. ><). It actually looks like it'd be interesting to go and see. I know my comic-book obsessed teacher (who actually teaches a cartooning class) said it was an awesome movie. <.< I'm just glad that I'm no longer living in the same house as my Batman-obsessed little brother; then I'd get dragged to see it again, and again, and again.

But yeah, ads on tv seemed interesting, and 'hearing' you guys talk about it makes it seem like it's actually worth seeing...

After the Joel Shumacher films, could the Batman franchise really go down any lower?

All I remember from those films is that Jim Carey would've been better as the Joker instead of the Riddler.

You should go see it if you have any interest in doing so. I will not hesitate to declare Batman Begins as the best Batman movie made to this date. It's above the trash Shumaucher directed in the '90s and even the Burton movies.

Things can always get worse. However, Begins is an attempt at redemption for the series. The movie is excellent and if the franchise could be saved by it's quality alone, it would be. However, this isn't the case. The movie needs to do well(although not Spider-Man level revenue) for the franchise to truly be ressurected.

The majority of the casting in Batman Forever and Batman and Robin was abysmal. Especially the latter.

I don't think Jim Carrey would have made a great Joker however. I don't think Jim Carrey should really be playing any villains in any Batman movies; his style is far too over the top. They also ruined Two Face trying to capitalize on Carrey's popularity by making him a more goofy villain to further Carrey's attempts at humour in the movie.

Oddly enough, I've heard that Val Kilmer was Bob Kane's favorite Bruce Wayne/Batman. I plan to rewatch Forever sometime to watch Kilmer's performance. The movie is mediocre but that doesn't necessarily reflect his performance.

To the board members: if you haven't seen this movie yet and have an interest in it, then do so. Batman Begins is a wonderful movie and you shouldn't be disappointed. Unless you hate Batman or something.

I also disagree about Jim Carrey being the Joker..

Joker is low key for being crazy. Jack Nicholson was quite a good Joker in my opinion...portayed him almost to a T. Jim Carrey would've overdramaticized the insanity, in my opinion. He probably would've been a little too "flighty" also, for that role.. Just look at how he skips around as the Riddler.

And poor Two-Face..hopefully the next films have him as the villain, and they get him RIGHT this time. Also a better Penguin (not dissing Danny Devito, dissing Tim Burton I guess), Mr Freeze, and Poison Ivy would be good. Might as well throw Catwoman in there too, and NOT be Halle Berry or wear a Frankenstein costume.

So I saw Batman Begins for the second time yesterday. Simply put, the moving is amazing. It's not perfect, but it has to be one of the best movies based off comics, especially a mainstream title ever made. Sin City was handled rather well too, but I didn't really care for the content.

I'm abit disappointed by how little discussion this movie has generated here. It's sad to see such a wonderfully crafted movie catch so little attention. The theaters were almost empty too, both times I saw the movie. Batman Begins is one of the best movies to be released so far this year.

Well I'd love to add more to the conversation. But I haven't had the chance to see the movie, so I'd doubt there's much help I could do.

Well, I saw the movie once and I never read the comic books...so I don't many things about Batman except what I saw in the animated series and those old series with Adam West (BANG! SMACK! XD)

Anyway~

I thought the movie was excellent. It moved along nicely and retained the "dark" aspect of his character. I also liked how Gotham seems beautiful from the outside, but really is rotten on the inside.

Eh heh, I just saw the movie for somebody’s birthday. I'm not the biggest fan of Batman so I was a bit critical.

First of all near the beginning, when Bruce was almost peer pressured into decapitating the murderer guy on the mountain, it made no sense to me why instead of just doing so he saw fit to;

Spoiler (click to toggle)
smack the fire rod out of the mans hands instead, setting the place on fire, and then killing everyone in a blaze, including the man he didn't want to kill a second ago.

Then Bruce’s' bed bugged me. Come on now, admit the posts looked like breasts. And other little things like when Racheal is in his Batmobile and trippin on the gas stuff he insist to keep yelling her name at the top of his lungs, thinking it will calm her down or something.

Overall it was just a mediocre time killer for me. I was never a big fan of the series to begin with so there was little hope from the start. I could see how the fans of the comic would like it though, had some rad things, but I prefer actually super powers to a billionaire buying gadgets. It was good for a watch, but nothing really great for non-fans of the comic.

He set the building on fire so that he could escape. As "Ducard" told him, it was too late to turn back. Had he not done what he would have, it would have meant his life.

Secondly, you never actually see everyone die in the fire. You see Ra's Al Ghul's body double die, but that was as much his fault as it was Bruce's. Bruce made an effort to save "Ducard" not only because their relationship, but also because he knocked him unconcious and he was unable to escape himself. Later when Ra's burns down Wayne Manor, several of the familiar faces of the League of Shadows are present, hinting that they escaped the blaze.

You're entitled to your own opinion. It is, however, unfortunate that your bias towards Batman influences your decision on a movie that is rather well done.

I saw it a couple of days ago, and I thought it was really good. Even in comparison to movies like Hitchhiker's Guide and Lemony Snickett, which I'd been particularly waiting for. I would suggest it to anyone who even knows diddly about Batman. :D

The villains were surprisingly well cast... I couldn't help but think, though, that the Scarecrow looked a lot like the Willie Wonka in the upcoming remake. So I wouldn't suggest taking little kids to both in one day (not that I AM suggesting breaking the PG-13 code at all, either... ^^; )

Spoiler (click to toggle)
The part where Scarecrow shows Falcone "his mask" is really cool.

I was actually pretty surprised to see Ra's was part of this movie. I thought they'd overlook him.
Spoiler (click to toggle)
I knew who he was from the start, however, because his character looks so much like the one in the animated series.

I really enjoyed it myself (I saw it with Heat). The new Batmobile needn't dodge anything! With 6 wheels and all that bulk, you just run over bust through stuff if you gotta manuver(sp?). Heat stole my favorite part.

The Scarecrow is made all the cooler by suit and tie, which I guess is a prodominet wardrobe throughout the movie.

I look forward to the sequel...

Joker maybe...?

I actually wondered the same thing about that farmer at the beginning as Gutter though. I guess he escaped... somehow.

Though there is talk of a sequel, I highly doubt that it will take place right after this movie.

Spoiler (click to toggle)
At the end of the movie he talks about the new guy, leaves a calling card, that card is the Joker, think about it, it's leading into the first movie, the one by Burton.

Just wanted to throw that out there.

There's a problem with that idea, Mr. Match.

Batman Begins RESET the whole damn movies. :P

So the first one doesn't count /anymore/! (If you will remember that the first batman movie had the Joker killing Bruce's parents whereas it was some goon who did it in the movie)

Little hard to try to tie Batman Begins to Batman (1990?)...
