If you had to take up a new language, what would you either study or recommend to someone else? I'm excluding English from the start, since that's what we're all using to communicate here: a majority of answers would probably name exactly that. Several of the languages listed in the poll can be interesting to learn depending on what you want to work with. Feel free to say something else, too: the poll doesn't have to limit you.

That's an easy question for me to answer! I'd pick Japanese in an instant. From what I know about the language, I love it! I'd recommend it to anyone.

Latin!
Latin is the root for music, and medical terms and God knows what else.
It's a dead language and it sprouts all the romance languages, so it's a good language to learn if you ever want a career in the medical feild. Even in taxonomy, It's latin.

I would most likely put up with German since Germany is a direct economic partner of the Netherlands and many former Eastern European countries prefer that above English. Plus it's easy enough for me to learn.

I'd do Japanese and German if I could say two. Japanese because I don't want to read subtitles my whole life for anime. Plus, I think it's pretty cool. With all those sybmols. I'd do German because my mom's side of the family lives in Germany. My mom, grandma, and all them know it. So I can't understand a thing when they talk to relatives that visit.

EDIT: I forgot I want to make a manga when I grow up. >.< But, it would probably suck so why bother? Plus, I love Japanese culture.

You have failed to furnish an intellectual reason to learn Japanese.

I took spanish, and beleive it or not, I understand a lot more things, It even helped me with my english grades. When you learn to conjugate spanish infinitives, you learn a lot more about how the english language works.

I take Spanish as well. I've figured a few things about the English language (though since it's summer, I'm having trouble remembering just what those things were. My brain go bye-bye during summer...). But something I've really learned is that English has a lot of irregular verbs as compared to Spanish (at least from what I've learned thus far).

And do you really need to have an intellectual reason to learn a language? I want to learn Japanese, even though I know that I'm far less likely to run across someone speaking Japanese as opposed to Spanish. I just really love the language. It's some people feel the same with French, Spanish, German, Chinese, and Latin.

I want to learn Japanese. Mostly for anime reasons. :P Like Kagome_Sakura's subtitle one, and I want to go to Japan to buy stuff. :D Maybe make manga...

After that I want to learn Chinese. Mainly so I can understand people. Like alot of my family and some of my friends. It's so annoying asking my friend, "What did they say?", over and over again! (I don't think she likes it either...)

I, luckily, will soon have the choice between French and German (yay!). I chose to carry on with German because it is very similar to English, so therfore easier to earn, in many ways. I also didn't choose French because many English people speak French, far more than German, so I think it would be the most useful to learn if I'm getting a job to work in other countries (especially Germany  )

However, for the poll, I chose Spanish. Why? I chose Spanish for the simple reason that lots of people go to Spanish and it does make it a lot easier if you can speak to the Spaniards and I'd find a holiday there a lot easier if I spoke the language.

I'd say learn the ones if you're planning to visit that particular country.

I just happened to pick up Japanese because I thought it was interesting. XD

I really do want to learn Dutch and German. >>

Edit--- Dude, Sakura. That's mean. :P I read subtitles all my life because I have to. Obvious reasons! You get a cookie if you figure out /why/ I need subtitles. :P

I chose spanish, though in retrospect, Latin would be really useful as well. The reason I chose spanish is for this simple reason, there are alot of Mexicans coming into the southern united states, and knowing spanish will be extremely useful in this situation. Hows that for an intellectual reason?

1. Chinese
2. Japanese
3. Spanish

First and second are business languages. English is too a popular business language.

Spanish... Well... Around where I live, there are way too many people who can't speak English but only Spanish. I wouldn't recommend it other than where I live or if you want to visit Spain or Mexico...

Latin is a classical language. It's a base to some main current languages today.

Take German if you want to study English in full. English is the "offspring" of German.

I tried learning french and german but I didn't do well in either. -.-

I think learning Japanese would make my reading mangas and watching anime much easier as I wouldn't have to wait for translations and I might understand the jokes that are lost in said translations.

I was originally going to say French since I live in Canada and it's English and French here but then I realized that almost everything written in French is also written in English beside it.

I don't feel like learning any new languages. It's too hard to learn now. It'd be easier if I was taught it as a child.

EDIT - I'm picking Japanese as something fun since the other languages don't have much application to me. I already know Chinese so that doesn't count.

Well, my mom is French, so that would be my first choice for a second language. Though, seeing as my school only offers Spanish and German, I'd have to opt for Spanish.

Ugh! I take Spanish in school. To me it is a VERY boring subject. I don't really learn anything from Spanish class but, how to say, "I am going to the bread store." Mabey it's boring for me because we learn the same thing every year.

The only reason I said that was because sometimes the subtitles get all messed up >.< (my Naruto DVD had them way out of place). OMG! Are you deaf? Is that why you have to read subtitles.:(

Well, given a choice I'd learn any and every language possible; I love languages. But since I can't...

Japanese, partially for the whole anime/manga reason, partially because I love the way the language sounds, and partially 'cause there's... what's it my teacher said, economic and business type benifits. Eh. Though actually, I'm learning the language now...

Latin, because it's an ancient language and if you know that language, it's supposely easy to learn other European words.

And that's really it for the ones I'm actually interested in. Dun want to learn Spanish; never was fond of the language. Already attempted to learn French; was decent at it, but wasn't fond of it. Other languages would be nice to know, but aren't as interesting to me.

Choices are hard things to make. Especially when they're between two life-dreams. Which shall be chosen?

Heh, you already know what I'd pick, Japanese.

Their culture is very interesting, and I plan to go to Japan to live there someday. Thank goodyness my school doesn't require second languages! :P I live on a smaller island and we only have one language teacher who teaches French and Spanish. In the hall, he always greets people in foreign languages. Oneday, I said "Konichiwa, senpei" Of course, he had no clue what I had said.
Note: Senpei = Upper classman/leader who does not teach directly
I say this to him because he does not teach any of my classes. If he did, I would say "Sensei"

I'm starting to learn on my own through internet resources. I like the way they pronounce their words, also, they have interesting sounds. "Kioku no soko de, ne jin de shimatta. Ano hana no namae."
I have no clue what that says, only the last word. It is a line out of one of my favorite Jap songs, "Clover" which is a vocal version of the Rockman Zero 2 intro stage.

I take lyrics and convert them into katakana in my spare classtime. I studied Hiroshima and Nagasaki in english class, and kearned that it is an absolute insult to speak of the atom bomb in Japan.

Oh god, I ranting again. I better stop before I CAN'T stop!

Laterz!

I know, Spanish and French are probably more useful in my own world, but I'd really love to know German. The base reasoning behind this is that quite a bit of it sounds really awesome, or what I know of it. A better reason is that, yes that's right, Bonne Pirate robot names sound very German. I've made a few robots myself, but they've all been named after European cities, such as Windsor and Exeter, rather than anything German. It would be helpful to know some German so I could make them more authentic...

Or I assume they're German names. Gustav and Gesselshaft are German, I believe. And there's a lot of other German-ey ones too, like Feldynauht(sp?).

Sometimes English subtitles are different from the actual Japanese. This is normally to make the subtitles match what's going on in the scene (Japanese word play that uses props is one such instance). At least, I'm pretty sure how subtitles mess stuff up.

I'd like to learn Japanese, but, seeing as I do not currently know the language, and I am not looking to learn it any time soon. Therefore, I really enjoy subtitles. Listening to the authentic Japanese voices of anime characters (and those of the critically acclaimed "House of Flying Daggers") is lots of fun, but it sure wouldn't be if I had no idea what was being discussed. I'm also glad to see some games allow you to switch to Japanese with subtitles (or in some case just simple text). It was a great touch on Samurai Warriors (Yoshimoto Imagawa's Japanese voice is much better than his english, as are the random officers), and it's also fun in Nippon Ichi games such as Disgaea and Phantom Brave (although American voices, such as Mid-boss's and Mr. Canary's are pretty good already).

So you really don't have to be deaf to enjoy subtitles.:D

And I'm sorry to hear that Kia.:(

Zhang Yimou's films are in Chinese..

By the way, if you enjoyed Samurai Warriors, I suggest giving Kessen III a try if you already haven't. The games are not the same really, but are slightly similiar.

That might be true for console games, but on the PC, it's a different market altogether. Many of the popular game markers are from the US or the UK, among others.

By that logic, you might want to consider learning Chinese: they are producing more and more goods, and they've become much more strong on the international scene in the last several years. Who knows if Chinese won't become the next big language!
