My trial period expired on Monday...
... so I bought the game.
I love open worlds, especially one like this where you have a near-total control of your environment. The feeling of wonder I get when doing simple-looking tasks that'd be impossible in pretty much all other games is worth the price of admission alone to me.
About a week back, I dug a long mine underground in a straight line, with a 90 degrees turn in the middle as I was facing a lava flow. I eventually decided to surface, and built a staircase that happened to break ground on a peninsula. Fine. Some days later, I dug another mine in another direction that happened to break into a cavern. I explored that one, broke through a second nearby one, then encountered an underground waterfall. I climbed that and explored the third opening I found myself into. At that point, after going through so many turns and climbs, I decided to get outside to orient myself. What I didn't immediately notice is that the new exit point I created was literally two blocks away from my previous staircase from some days ago, only that it went in the opposite direction! It might sound silly, but I found it awesome how I could connect the two underground shafts to form a hub linking it all!
When I was a child, I used to love Spring as I'd get my waterproof boots, go outside, and create paths for the flowing water coming from the melting snow. It was simple enough to do in the dirt, especially on roads that have an incline. I could do derivations, dams, shortcuts... I get the same silly feeling of "ohh, I control water!" whenever I make water flow within the game. I figured out this weekend how to create waterfalls, and I've been having fun with that. Drowning caverns by digging through an underground water source can also be neat, especially if you rush to create a dam to save part of the cavern!
I guess I'll be playing this one for a long time. Usually not for long stretches, sometimes not for weeks, but enough to keep coming back!
