I got the Humble Indie Bundle 3 this weekend, as I was curious to get a few lightweight PC games. VVVVVV, part of the package, is definitely worth it. Gotta love chiptune music!

Now, what was part of the package? A free trial of Minecraft, of course, available until August 14. I figured, if I'm to give it a shot, it's now or never! I installed it last night and played for about an hour. Died on my first night, sealed myself off with no room to move (and no light!) for the second one, then built a cliff-side shelter with a small window and a few torches for the third one. It's difficult to get started when you have no idea on how the game actually works, so I loaded up a tutorial to learn how crafting works and get myself a few basic tools.

It's fun so far, even if it's awfully confusing at times. For example, I've yet to understand how I'm supposed to eat food to heal the damage I get from the monsters, but I'll figure it out eventually. There are tons of differences between the classic and current versions, and I barely saved myself from drowning in a waterfall I had created a few seconds ago only!

Sandboxes are fun. :)

Eating pork chops is as easy as right-clicking it when holding it. Cook it for more health when eating it.

My trial period expired on Monday...

... so I bought the game.

I love open worlds, especially one like this where you have a near-total control of your environment. The feeling of wonder I get when doing simple-looking tasks that'd be impossible in pretty much all other games is worth the price of admission alone to me.

About a week back, I dug a long mine underground in a straight line, with a 90 degrees turn in the middle as I was facing a lava flow. I eventually decided to surface, and built a staircase that happened to break ground on a peninsula. Fine. Some days later, I dug another mine in another direction that happened to break into a cavern. I explored that one, broke through a second nearby one, then encountered an underground waterfall. I climbed that and explored the third opening I found myself into. At that point, after going through so many turns and climbs, I decided to get outside to orient myself. What I didn't immediately notice is that the new exit point I created was literally two blocks away from my previous staircase from some days ago, only that it went in the opposite direction! It might sound silly, but I found it awesome how I could connect the two underground shafts to form a hub linking it all!

When I was a child, I used to love Spring as I'd get my waterproof boots, go outside, and create paths for the flowing water coming from the melting snow. It was simple enough to do in the dirt, especially on roads that have an incline. I could do derivations, dams, shortcuts... I get the same silly feeling of "ohh, I control water!" whenever I make water flow within the game. I figured out this weekend how to create waterfalls, and I've been having fun with that. Drowning caverns by digging through an underground water source can also be neat, especially if you rush to create a dam to save part of the cavern!

I guess I'll be playing this one for a long time. Usually not for long stretches, sometimes not for weeks, but enough to keep coming back!

I meant to comment on your video, but I forgot to do so!

That's one heck of a complex environment you've got there! The amount and size of buildings is impressive, and the details put in the architecture really shows that these were planned and not just put together at random (which is what I'm doing now :P ). With so many elements coming out of the ground, your underground must be full of large holes!

That's a bit too organized for me at this point, though. I'm having fun doing whatever I want on my map while I discover what the game allows me to do. Contributing to a large city would be going against that idea!

On my end, I've been having fun digging around, exploring and building a base and a long railroad. That railroad has been giving me some odd results, though. It's getting long and I might be going too fast riding it for the game to keep up, as it happened twice now that ground textures wouldn't be displayed properly. The end result is that I can see right through the ground! See Exhibit A and Exhibit B for examples, where you can also see part of my underground work. This tells me two things: there are lots of caverns down there, and there sure is a lot of lava too!

I caved and bought it after seeing Survival Mode. I'm building a small Metroid-style city map where you have to explore all over for items and stuff. I totally messed up the first building and don't feel like rebuilding it right now.

Where was that flagged as an ad? It can't be here, as I don't do any active filtering of the post's contents.

For the record, I'm not against trying out multiplayer. I'd be curious to give it a shot at some point, but I'd rather do it on a smaller scale, with fewer people and buildings already established so I wouldn't feel horribly behind!

As an update on my playing, I broke through last week in a massive underground cave system. I'll be able to mine ressources from that place for weeks! There are so many diverging paths and complex rock formations that I don't think it's 100% secure yet; and since I can hear monster screams through some walls, I can probably expand that area even further with a bit of digging.

So since 1.8 came out I actually decided to give Minecraft a proper shot.

For my first night, I wanted a relatively safe space. Luckily for me, I found a super tall mountain with a waterfall. I made a small dugout behind the waterfall, hoping it would wash any enemies away.

It was meant to be a temporary hideout, but I actually really liked the location, so I went to work.

http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596948515415925610/3A26E14822C40DB2C933B9601205D072C73D9224/

First up was a ton of stairs up to the place. I don't do the whole "jumping" thing, so this was my top priority.

http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596948515415924609/A8A9EA6CBC01A28A0313F0C6A78DB1EC0F797694/

This is the entrance after I outfitted it with proper doors.

http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596948515415923240/89520BCE1CC6ED56A4F0DFD89159EC3A7FCFFC3E/

After I started to expand said hidey-hole, I realized that it was really close to the outside on both the right when you walk in as well as the surface of the actual mountain. This glass fixed the first problem. Plus it looks cool.

http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596948515415922459/0CB3F6052434E40436D4886E3DD3539D25A76391/

For the upper-mountain issue, I decided to just embrace it and make my home a two story. On the second story I put this second set of doors that goes out to the mountaintop.

http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596948515415921950/A4B237BDA97F0573671886D52765970506F9879E/

Here's some more stairs from outside the previous doors.

http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596948515415920943/CE77E1BCD675FCF4F6B37D4CDE2A66566D0F0F54/

I leveled some of the top of the mountain and made....this. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO WITH IT. That's why it's literally nothing more than a wooden box. I'll think of something I'm sure.

http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596948515415920328/474E7AB1D23A612E838BAD99E945A7B711D6E2A6/

What the mountain overlooks. I'm not worried about running out of wood anytime soon.

And since this is still survivor mode, creepers will still be around to wreck it all.

OH WELL.

I'm thinking about possibilities...

If I was to start a Minecraft server, a real one with it's dedicated website and all that, would you join to play?

If yes, would you tell your Minecraft-playing friends as well?

If not, why? You are not interested in Minecraft multiplayer, too involved on another server, or there's another reason?

Speak your mind!

I'd play assuming the server had an awesome seed (Like "Professor Layton". No, really! ). I know the world would eventually be broken down for use in creative purposes, but an awesome starting point never hurts anyone.

I'd be willing to tell my Minecraft friends about it, assuming I had Minecraft friends.

Well the world is huge. You will find a great amount of islands, oceans, lakes, and streams all across it once out of the cities. Plenty of places to put your beginning house or base. No rules against the amount of houses you can have either. No rules on size of building of course.

For anyone keeping track, here's an update. :)

I decided to go forward with this (yay!), and I've been making the needed preparations. I'm now on the verge of purchasing a server to play on, and I've been busy building the website featuring the main information about that server to help recruiting new players.

I'm planning to have all this ready to go within a few weeks. Stay tuned!

I've been making steady progress in setting this up! The server is now running, and I'm preparing it for everyone to enjoy. As a teaser, here's a screenshot of the spawn point as it stands right now:

Image

I've secured the spawn point and made a few basic constructions... and got more Creepers to blow up in my face than I'd have liked. I've explored a bit of the world, and it looks like a fun place to adventure in, full of surprises! I'm now setting up plugins, securing the server against trolls and griefers, and building the website to showcase the whole thing. Coming soon (tm)!

I know that Ribitta and one of his friends could help build you an effective mob grinder for supplies you can't just mine. 'course, it wouldn't look pretty with all the torches you'd need to place.

We're launched! Now that we've got a forum dedicated to Minecraft, I'm closing this generic topic.

For more information about the website and our Minecraft server, post in the Creeper's Lab forum.
For anything else related to Minecraft, including game updates, head to the Minecraft forum.
