This is my first poll so if the options are weird or don\'t turn out right, sorry.

Anyways, I\'m taking a biology course in my university studies and recently, the lectures have been focussing on topics involving global environmental problems that are starting to scare me a little.

Resources are being used up at an alarming rate, waste products aren\'t being \'reduced\' fast enough and the pollution... My goodness , the pollution is insane.

Maybe it\'s just all the things I have to deal with on a regular basis are enough for me but after learning all these things, I\'m really worried about the planet.

I\'m just going to list some of the things that are... \'bad\'. I don\'t really know how to put it.

-Water. Only a small percentage is drinkable and most of it is locked up in polar glaciers or wasted simply by keeping the tap running.
-Fossil fuels. Notice that the price of gas is going up? We\'re running out and when we do, all those cars and water heaters and whatnot are going to need some other source of fuel that we simply haven\'t come up with yet.
-Garbage. So much garbage, so few places to put it... And it doesn\'t decompose fast enough.
-Antibiotic resistant bacteria. Ok, so this isn\'t really something that\'s wrong with the planet but it\'s a big problem for us. I just heard in a documentary that the Bubonic plague lives on within rock squirrel and prairie dog ticks. The is the same Bubonic plague that was nicknamed \"the Black Death\" and obliterated like all of Europe and Asia in the middle ages.

Anyways, I can\'t think of anything else to add right now but I\'d like to hear what some of you think.

Our planet is on a downward spiral to oblivion. As the dominant specie of the planet (and the ones who made the mess in the first place) we are the ones responsible for fixing the problems. However, I\'m not sure I can do much.

Yeah, it\'s obvious that we can\'t go on forever. People are trying to find new frontiers on other planets, but I beleive it\'s obsolete. God has a good plan for the world, and it will end when He\'s good and ready for it.

That is my beleif, and I\'ll hold to it.

It won\'t make any sound, because sound doesn\'t travel in vacuum ;)

I don\'t think the Earth will go down that quickly. Steps need to be taken against pollution, yes, but we haven\'t reach a dramatic level yet.

We haven\'t reached that level but it would probably be too late to do anything if we were actually there.

There was this analogy of a malfunctioning plane being pushed off a very high cliff. We think the plane is flying since it hasn\'t crashed yet but it is very inevitable and is happening fast. The cliff is supposed to represent our resources and the plane is us, I guess. I don\'t know but I don\'t want to hear \"I\'m just one person\" or something similar to that.

Erm... it\'s been happening. Forever. Maybe the creation of fire was the big root of it. With technological advances, we have to take bigger risks. Of course, there are branches of technology to decrease the wasting of resources of other tech. The simple answer is that right now, there\'s almost no way to get rid of it without sacrificing comfort.
The biggest thing you can do is actually listen when people give little hints. Believe it or not, people aren\'t telling you not to smoke, to recycle, or to try walking just for their own health (but since it would help everyone, partially so! ;D)

Nope, get rid of the cars. Boats do cut down on fish, but cars are the main problem enviarmental changes... That and factories, for example there are factories in vietnam who have a restriction about letting out CO2. But what they do instead is release twice the ammount at night.

Anyhow, I could write about this for hours, but then nobody woul care to read it, so I wont.

*back to topic* I think I am going to suffer cuite a bit myself. If the weather continue to heat at this rate the polar ice will melt fludding Danmark and Holland. After that, the Gulf stream (I think that is the corect traslation) wich is a heated current from the south will change its course. In otherwords where I live (Norway), there will be another Ice age. First it will hit Iceland, than Norway, finland and parts of sweeden. Later Greenland, England, Canada and parts of Russa. And after that it will just continue to spread to the south.

However therre are far worse things to think about, but I don\'t have time to elaborate on that right now.

I knew, and I still don\'t care. If people want to fuck up their world for future generations to fix, then so be it, fine by me...I\'ll more than likely be long gone before anything drastically horrible happens.

That being said, I do recycle and stuff like that. But I still don\'t care of the actions of others- like I said, if they want to fuck everything up, then so be it. Doesn\'t quite matter to me.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the price we pay for advancing so far in so little time.

Reality swirled in a wholly blue manner, revealing absolutely nothing of merit. Things flashed madly in and out of existence like some entirely other sort of phenomena. On a whim, Kurt Vonnegut imploded, taking a sizeable hunk of Massachusetts with him. However, seeing as Massachusetts wasn't entirely sure it existed, the chunk wasn't all that big.

You\'re an evil, hate-filled, cynical, little man. :(

Does this mean that if you saw someone being robbed, you wouldn\'t help them because it wasn\'t \'your problem\'?

I admit that nothing will change drastically within your lifetime and that changes you make will seem insignificant but every little bit helps. Don\'t laugh at the people riding their bikes to work because at least they\'re trying.

Better yet, get the US to finally agree with other countries on environmental and anti-pollution efforts. Take the Kyoto Protocol, for example. Many, MANY countries signed it, but the US gouvernment refuses to do so.

About fossil fuels running out, that might not be such a bad thing. The only reason it is still around is because people make money off it. We already have other ways to power things, and much more effectively too, but as long as the big guys make money off it, they aren\'t going to let a cheaper powering method come up.

Another thing about the money and fuel, some time ago in Arizona, a big fuel line broke, and people were forced to pay for premium. The problem probably wouldn\'t have lasted so long if people weren\'t making a bundle from it. I am SO glad I don\'t have to drive yet.

No...not stupid. But perhaps flawed.
Flawed in a way of \'environmental logic\', if you will. Taking actions to boost our well being, comfort, and at the same time almost mutilating the earth in doing these actions, to comfort ourselves.

Our society is plauged by such
\'imperfections\', perfection of the world, of society (i.e world peace) being almost being unattainable, but ever a dream; a desire, in the minds, and hearts of a majority.
We, being imperfect beings, take sometimes naive actions, to seemingly better our lives, even if it means destroying the world around us.
But even if we do take actions against such, we still are flawed. We have the Kyoto Movement and such, yet we still live as at times mistaken, imperfect beings. But this of course makes us human.

EDIT: Fixed tiny spelling error

I think that a problem with fossil fuels running out would be that there would eventually be all these cars just sitting there. Unless we find something that works like gasoline, the internal combustion engine will need to be modified or replaced with something else if we don\'t want to waste the rest of the vehicle.

I have to go along with Phat alittle bit on this one. I\'m not saying I don\'t try to help but I don\'t try to make people help either. And as for the fossil fuel thing people can still use electric cars, plus when you think about it we have enough alternative forms of energy avaible, like Nuceluar, Wind, Hydro, and Solar Power so lack of fossil fuels shouldn\'t really be that big of a problem, unless you do include the big power corparations that\'re only intrested in the money. As for the garbage, there\'s not much that can be done about that besides recycling. Also, humanity isn\'t stupid as much as arrogant, hence why we act like everything on Earth is ours for the taking.

The US government won\'t do whatever other countries think is a good idea, it seems. Stupid fucking stubborn arrogant country. I blame it all on the hicks.

As for the Earth, well, I think she\'s got the ability to heal herself, so to speak. If we ruin her so bad, she\'ll probably kill us all off and start with something else. Hell, maybe she\'s trying to do that now with the SARS and avian flu and cancer and black death and AIDS and antibiotic resistant bacteria. :)

But anyways, yes, I do care about the planet, but only for the animals sake. We\'re ruining it for them.

And in response to \'if someone was being robbed, would you help them?\'... In this day and age, no I would not. My luck the guy/girl getting robbed would be some ungrateful whore that\'d look down their nose at me and say \'I could\'ve handled it\' and walk off without a thank you. Or even worse, the robber would have a gun and kill my ass. Not planning on sacrificing my life for someone I don\'t know.

Now, if someone fell..or needed help reaching something in a store, or something like that, I\'d try to help them. Course, my run ins with people at stores have not been pleasant.. XP Twice I had to deal with old strange men that were talking nonsense and scaring the hell outta my mother, once I had to deal with a \'slow\' person who was fighting with a little boy over something, and once I had to deal with an irate woman who accused me of stealing her shopping cart when I obviously didn\'t because I had never seen her before.. @_@

Yes, I don\'t like humans!
