Since my mother came up with the idea of me joining the army and searched through several magazines finding some subscription forms (dunno if she\'s just being silly or actually serious about that), I came up with the idea of starting this.

What do you think of joining the army? Are you capable enough doing so? Do you or your relatives have military experiences?

And what do you think about the trend of people joining the army? Is that all okay, or do you think it\'s better to be increased/decreased? Do you have any further opinions?

I sure as hell am never going to join the army/navy/whatever. I value my life too much. If a draft comes up, I\'ll just move to Canada. They\'re not getting me on their side for something that\'s not even my concern. I don\'t care about politics and who we\'re fighting, I care about staying alive. If people (in general) weren\'t idiots, the world would be a much better place.

I\'m not familiar with Dutch military... I know that with some countries, it\'s mandatory. What branch of services do you have over there?

And besides, your mom making this decision for you is a little silly. It is yours. ^^;

It\'s not mandatory over here... yet. There are four main branches of the military: The land-forces, the airforce, the marine and the constabulary. As my profession lies in the electronics I might have a fair chance of doing radio devices, target systems, etc.

On another note, the European Constitution is has yet been approved by the Parliament. So it would be a matter of time the Dutch army is going to be a part of the European army.

That\'s a given. It\'s more like bugging/teasing me into taking a look into the military duties.

If you want to, then please do, as the boys in blue (or camoflauge) are always a credit.

I myself couldn\'t join though. I am very unfit physically. Furthermore, I have nowhere near the required courage to head into a war. I know it\'s cowardly, but I just don\'t think I could do it...:(

So, it\'s your decision, and either way you choose is fine.

my dad and uncle were in the army. My uncle was in Vietnam and my dad in Desert storm. (thank god they\'re both alive) I have the physical capabilities, but if I do join, it\'ll be after I go to college. You\'ll start out as a lieutanant!

ps. Yes, I am alive.

As long as the US doesn\'t get the idea to annex Canada... :P

I have a friend who joined the military a few years ago, and from what he told me he really enjoys it there. He\'s still at the studies level, but he\'s curious about doing real service too. As for myself, I\'m not interested. It\'s just not my thing.

I\'m not capable of joining the army, but my grandpa was in WW 2. My uncle was a journalist during..the Vietnam war? Ah, I can\'t remember..but he took pictures over there and wrote articles..and such.

I don\'t really care if people do or don\'t join the army. I don\'t like it when people who are unable to join the army try to force others to join, though. It\'s like..\"oh, I can\'t join the army because I\'m a weakling, but YOU get over there and defend our country for me!\"

The army still sucks anyways though. I\'d be part of the marines if anything. You get a really spiffy outfit, hat, and sword.

Well, the military can be good. One of my cousins joined the airforce as an interpreter in Korea. He enjoys it quite a bit, of course, he doesn\'t fight, and when he\'s off he just goes drinking, so that may be part of it. Of course, another one of my cousins joined the marines, he HATED it. Luckily, he has osgood slaters disease(sp?) which is commonly called water on the knee, not too bad, but, got him an honorable discharge. I wouldn\'t join, personally, too much forced conformity, I get enough of that at school.

Actually you cant. In Mexico the military service is OBLIGATORY!!!
They do some sort of lotery, 10 black balls and 1 white ball, If you get the white, you are seved and they give you your documents just like if you have done it. If you get black you are given two choices: Going every saturdey for 52 weeks (1 year) or staying in a base for an entire month (5 weeks) I would personally pick up the second option, then if I like it, I might join, You cant judge something you dont try.

PD Im in mexico so I know how it works

I think joining the army is a foolish thing to do. Not only that, even America, which is supposed to be the greatest military power on Earth, will send mail to anyone to recruit them. My sister, who has sang in my church and would never consider killing another human, has received mail from them. And I, a pacifist, have received two letters from the Marines in one day (yesterday, I think). They used a different name on each letter, one with my first name and another with my middle name, which I prefer to go by.

Are they trying to be friendly or something? I don\'t know, but I just don\'t see a point in being friendly towards people you\'re probably going to end up sending down a road with two forks to death and one to life (in other words, they\'re probably going to send you to war. And if you go to war, you\'ve got a good chance of dying).

To answer some of my own questions: My granddad on my father\'s side had military experiences with the Delta Works (Where huge dams were to be built to fight against the sea), my other granddad was a police officer and my father is never called for military duties because everyone of his birth year were to be passed over, since there were \"too many\" militaries at the time.

I\'m not sure if I am actually capable of joining the militaries. Even if the land-forces are overly preferred, it would be nice if there\'s still some spots at the marines (The airforces seem pretty much dying over here, so my chance of joining there seems even more little). Otherwise I hope I can just stick with repairing electronics for the land-forces and not being put in the very front with a pair of chaingun or so.

I, for one, dislike the military. I have a behind-the-desk mind not a behind-the-gun mind. My political are different that that of a soldier. I really disagree with what the currrent adminastration of my country it doing. I wouldn\'t join the slaughter house out of anger and kill out of prejudice or vice versa. I feel that if you want to join your country\'s military, that is up to you. If you need to, I don\'t know what to say.

(was refering to the United States\' military as \"the slaughter house\" because we always bomb first, ask questions later)

If there was a 95% chance of being killed on any mission, then in a grop of 100 people, roughly 5 would live. I don\'t think ANYONE would be stupid enough to join then.

Joining the army or any other service doesn\'t necessarily mean you are going to be fighting on field. You could go into being a nurse, a paper pusher, or a messager on one of the bases.

I wouldn\'t go near the Army. I would recommend the Air Force, although you need good grades for that.

My friend said boot camp was hard, but he enjoyed the skills they taught him such as aiming a rifle.

Actually, even if there\'s war. Nurses, for instance, will probably be more active than ever during wartime.
