Wooo - no longer have the "75" at the end of my name - can finally just be good 'ol Kagato. Guess the original user must have been a free account (ala Classic) 'cause it's mine now baby!
At long last, some of you poor souls stuck with funny and old names will be able to change them!
When? February 4th.
On my side of things, everything is set and ready. All plugins that weren't ready for name changes have been purged, and I updated the website/forums backend over the holidays to handle this. From a player's point of view, it should be completely transparent.
As a side note, I can also change forum names for those who'd like something different (either ...
So some of the folks from the last server I played on fired up their own personal community server after our official server was decommissioned. They just finished an in-game auction for this bad boy:

Well, Bukkit took a kick to the privates today to say the least as EvilSeph and gang (TnT, etc.) are no longer going to be doing Bukkit updates/maintenance...

That said, Dinnerbone tweeted that he personally will be updating Bukkit to 1.8, so we should at least get to enjoy the additions that the next update brings. What concerns me is what happens after? At least being done "in-house" per se, we might see quicker ...
If true (given that folks are denying comment, you know that there are at least talks going on) and it does happen, I'm kind of on both sides of the fence with my thoughts on the matter.
On one hand, Microsoft has some smart, talented programmers. Make all the jokes you want about Windows and it's long hated history, but they can/do some quality work (die in a fire Andro and your Apple z ...
Banners will be a thing in 1.8. I don't know about you, but I think this is HUGE. It finally adds a way to create markers or symbols that could be added everywhere without relying on signs or huge pixel artwork. Up to six symbols/patterns can be stacked on a single pattern using the 16 dye types, so the number of possibilities is large (400^6).
I can easily imagine cities (or even players) coming up with their own patterns. ...
Tracking the tweets of several Mojang staff members, I'm learning this morning that Minecraft name changing will finally be possible sometime after 1.8's release. Good for those stuck with a weird name or a misspelled one, bad for me as I'll have to rewrite some components to deal with this new option. :P The current target for 1.8 is sometime in May and name changing will be available a bit later, so it's not like this'll happen soon. Still, we finally have a targe ...
Thought I'd give a quick little rundown on what all is needed and how to install shaders for Minecraft. This will be written under the assumption that you're running 1.7.2. While it is possible to run in 1.7.4 and 1.7.5, I personally haven't tried. MCP (core code that most Mods are based off of) hasn't been updated for those versions yet and the mods I use have thusly not been updated.

Have you found any? It's an integral part of all games nowadays. I just found out this exists http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=iNw2YcAK9Wc It's a fountain of cats.
We're getting new stone types in 1.8, apparently! Their only purpose is decoration. I quite like how they look, and might update some of my buildings to integrate this down the line.

I was seriously annoyed to find out about this right after moving to 1.7 and it's new environment, but thankfully, Jeb isn't an idiot. All three main types are planned to be craftable exactly for this reason, while the smooth varieties are craftable the same ...
I figured we'd need this eventually, so I went ahead and made it. Keep in mind server-side screenshots should (I'm assuming) go in the SCREENSHOTS discussion in the Creeper's Lab forum.
I'll start us off with one of my many projects, and my favorite to date.
Who here has seen M.C. Escher's Staircases? http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a3/Escher%27s_Relativity.jpg

The location for Minecon 2013 was just announced, sooner than I expected:

For those who don't want to watch, it'll be in Orlando, Florida, on November 2 and 3.

... you try to use it's gameplay mechanics in other games.
I was playing Super Mario 3D Land this morning, and wanted to take a peek at what was hiding at the end of a ledge. I immediately decided to crouch and walk straight toward the pit... and quickly fell to my doom.
Heads up for something that'll turn into a big annoyance for a little while, at least for myself
In an upcoming update, most likely 1.4, doors, trapdoors, levers and buttons will no longer activate with a left-click. You'll need to right-click to trigger them!
While the detailed schedule and registration are not available yet, we've got a date and location: Disneyland Paris, on November 24-25, 2012.
I must admit that I'm tempted to go. This could be the peak of Minecraft's popularity (although that's hard to say with the path that this game followed!), and it sounds like something that could be fun. Where else do you find many people wearing painted or printed cardboard boxes on their he ...
Dinnerbone and Jeb have been busy adding new decorative items and structures in the upcoming 1.4 release. Rose will probably go nuts with all the possibilities these new items will offer for indoor setups!
This might sound silly to some, and I'm aware of how much Minecraft is popular, but it really hits you when you see something like this.
According to Wikipedia, Minecraft is the 8th best selling PC game ever, and the only one part of the top 25 not to be part of a franchise of some sort. That's pretty dang impressive when you think about it!
Those who have been here for years and are now wondering why people are making such a fuss about Minecraft, this could interest you.
Starting with version 1.3, released yesterday, the game includes a free demo mode. Create an account, download the launcher, and start it using your new account. You'll be offered a "Play Demo" option, which allows you 100 minutes of gameplay. You won't be able to join any servers, but it can give you a better idea of what the game has to ...
What the topic title says: the update to 1.3 is planning to be available on August 1st. Will Bukkit give us a nice surprise and update extremely soon after, as they did for 1.2.5? Maybe, I don't know... but I sure hope so!
I'm putting this up as a warning to those who might consider purchasing Minecraft, as this keeps coming up again and again: the username you pick when registering on the website is your multiplayer username, visible to everyone, and you can't change it at this time.
Starting with 1.2, the villagers will start "breeding" themselves to fill all of the available homes in their towns. This means that, if an NPC village happens to have some empty houses (or some existing villagers were killed), the existing ones will spread until they populate the place. This also applies for houses that we're adding ourselves, so we could find ourselves with a thriving population soon. :) I like the sound of that!
