May I suggest Final Fantasy? It\'s pleased thousands, although you might be off to a rocky start if you pick up at the newest. Then again, FF is infamous for trashing its best characters. *coughFF3tossedintovoidofnothingnesscough*
I\'d suggest picking up at 7 if it\'s not behind the names, it was one of the best rated. If your looking for the newest, I think that\'s FF13 for the PS2 or FF Crystal Chronicles for the Cube. I wouldn\'t suggest picking up the new online one if you haven\'t tried any yet.
Wait a minute, you\'ve probably already tried FF, right? Never mind.

Final Fantasy 13!? What\'s the year on your calendar? :P The latest Final Fantasy game to come out for the PS2 is XI, and is only playable online.

Other good RPG series are Dragon Warrior and Phantasy Star... There are plenty of others, though.

Do you have a SNES/ZSNES/SNES9x?

Then try Chrono Trigger

Do you have PSX/PS2/ePSXe?

Try Chrono Cross

Man, well... I don\'t know FF! All I have is the Legends games and SNES ones... and X-I. I don\'t keep up with the series, I don\'t know who Sepiroth is besides he\'s evil and his looks, so sue me!
...
Oh, and I\'d suggest the Lunar Saga. It\'s character designs are really great.

Shining Force Series is also good, IMO. But too bad the majority of the games are only available on dead consoles, most of which are Sega ones.

I just have to correct this, since it\'s VERY wrong. Zelda is NOT an RPG! It\'s an adventure game. An rpg has ither more than one player, in orther words roles, as in RPG=RolePlayingGame, and second you are able to gain levels and/or edit stats or custemize equipment. There are more things to mention, but I\'m not going to go into further details other that Shigeru miamoto (Links creator) has stated tha he dislikes the controlled element in RPG\'s, He would never do an RPG with Link. He actually intreduced levels in Links Adventure (Legend of Zelda 2) on the NES, but regreted it.

In conclution, an stated by the man himself: Zelda is no RPG.

Anyhow, if I am to conribute to this topic: One of the best RPG\'s I\'ve ever played was Crono Trigger, Final Fantasy III (or V as it is know as in Japan) Final Fantasy IX is also good, though I never REALLY played it... I like the entire FF series, but I\'ve played so few games. I can also recomend Paper Maro and Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga (Supervised but not made by Miamoto), And of course, lets not forget MegaMan Battle Network 1-4

I\'ll add more if I remember anything.

I think I\'ve written to much, my fingers hurt.....

Well Technically, Legend of zelda is an RPG. It\'s an Action/RPG As in an action game with RPG elements in it.

Golden Sun was the series that brought me back in the RPG genre...There\'s also FFL3 that\'s the best FF game for Game Boy. You may also want to try Tactics and Disgea(sp?): Somethin of Darkness (I think it\'s \"Hour\" but I\'m not sure lol)

Have you ever heard of the Breath of Fire series, by CAPCOM? Those are really good RPG games, in my opinion. If not, then have you heard of the Wild Arms series, yet? Wild Arms is also a really nice RPG series. How about Lufia, for the SNES? This one\'s good - not the best - but good.

For me, I just can\'t wait for Megaman Command Mission. It\'s gonna\' be so cool that... *trails off*

Changing. Please wait...

List of RPGS I\'ve played:

Breath of Fire series
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Illusion of Gaia
Super Mario RPG
Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga
Secret of Evermore
Secret of Mana
Seiken Dentetsu (I think I spelled that wrong..) 3, which is part of the Secret of Mana series
Legend of Legaia
Final Fantasy series
Quest for Glory series
..and thats all I can think of off the top of my head.

The problem with some of these RPGs is that they\'re not technically part of the series they\'re in (or it seems like they\'re not..) yet they\'re marketed as sequels.

I suggest Breath of Fire, Quest for Glory, Final Fantasy, or possibly Secret of Mana if you have access to Seiken Dentetsu 3. Chrono Trigger is an excellent standalone game. Chrono Cross is an..okay standalone game, just don\'t pair it with Trigger and you\'ll do fine.

The topic is a couple of months old, but...
Yeah, Lufia rocks hard. I personally liked the SNES games of the series better, but if you have to have something modern you could pick up the GBA games that have come out.
The main reason to get it is the ancient cave. It\'s this system where you enter a series of dungeons that changes every time. Your party is set to lvl 1 and you run through, collecting experience and items to get to higher levels. At the end of the dungeons (or each dungeon in some games), there is a boss. Also, you can find extremely powerful weapons and armor in blue treasure chests that you can keep even after leaving the Ancient Cave. Anyhow, the stories pretty neat even discluding all this. :)

I would have to recommend Legend Of Dragoon. Granted, it isn\'t in a series (as far as I know), but it is still a good game.

But I\'d agree with those that mentioned Wild Arms and FF series. Those are really good games, though some are a bit nerve racking.
