Really? Can you prove it isn\'t literal? By the same token, can anyone prove it is?
ahh I hate to get into religious conversations like this, but I\'ll start with the mark of the beast 666 it\'s a roman game played so numbers represent letters or sounds, 666 would translate to the name of a ruler of Rome, but take a closer look at the original text and you\'ll see that the number is actually 668(I think, now that number MAY be wrong) and that was the name of the ruler of Rome at the time john wrote revelations(I\'ll give the names as soon as i go look them up). Rome was the enemy of the Christians as I\'m sure you know, and almost all of revelations is symbolism, and is not to be taken literally...just like I think genesis is seeing how god created man only 6 days after earth was created...but as we all know that\'s not true. back to revelations, not to mention that it was written in about the year 96 and it gave al indications that the world would end soon not 2000 years later. Every couple hundred years people look at revelations again and think that the end is coming RIGHT then, because the world has always had the same problems, and always will. John also believed that Roman power was illegitimate and that the worship of the emperor was idolatry, so a lot of the imagery he used at the time was directed at the roman emperor, it\'s kind of like ancient flaming(you know like what happened to tn only a lot more creative).
The apostle Paul, in Romans 13, advocated obedience to Rome. And advocated living quietly in peace with non-Christians in the Roman Empire. [historical fact]John advocated resistance, so John\'s book was controversial all through the time that Christians were not an officially recognized or legitimate group. Once Christianity became legitimate, and recognized by Constantine, then the Book of Revelation was a problem. Because one didn\'t want to insult the city of Rome or the Roman emperor[\\fact] that\'s really all the proof I have fro now...but I\'ll try to come up with more later.
EDIT: to anyone who cares every letter of the Greek and Aramaic alphabets was also a number, any name might be represented by adding up the numerical values of all its letters, this would of course convey the name to those who already knew it. The number 666 in Aramaic letters stood for Nero Caesar, and in as far as i can find has a deper allusion to Domitian(the ruler from September 14 AD 81 - September 16 AD 96) whom the church was indeed calling the second Nero, a Nero come to life again.
